Greening Mua Initiative Launch

The Greening Mua Initiative was officially launched on the 20th December 2019 by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Environment and Forestry, Madam Betty Maina. The Principal Secretary, The National Treasury, Dr Julius Muia was the host. It took place at Mua location chiefs’ office compound in Mua – Kaseve. During the launch, 55,000 tree seedlings were distributed to residents of Mua Hills for planting during the current rain

The Machakos County government chief executive for water and environment, Naomi Mutie graced the occasion. During the Launch, a special request was made by the chief coordinator to the Principal Secretary, State Department for Environment and Forestry to allow the families with big sizes of land to be given more than 50 tree seedlings for planting during the then ongoing short rains.

The National treasury Principal Secretary, Dr. Julius Muia thanked the Greening Kenya Initiative and the Ministry of Environment and Forest for providing the 125,000 seedlings to Mua Hills residents. He also thanked the State Department of Correctional Services ( Kenya Prison) for transporting the seedlings to Mua Hills. “We are going to work closely with providers of Green Financing to better the environment,”

The National Treasury jointly with Kenya Water Partnership conducted a field visit Mua Hills, Machakos County to; access the impacts of climate change and initiate crucial partnerships with the community on the 12th March 2020

Monitoring and evaluaton for phase 1

The team of the Green Champions conducted an M&E exercise from 2nd - 4th March 2020 to determine the survival rate of tree seedlings planted in December 2019 and January 2020.

World environmental day

As part of its community sensitization efforts, a GMEI founder sensitized the participants who attended the Bamboo field day on the need to be marking important world days especially related to the environment. Participants were encouraged to mark the World Environment Day (WED) celebrated every 6th day of June. This year’s theme was “Time for Nature”.
